The History Of Churches in Warwick

 

 

Even though the Roman Catholic Church may not have been the first church to be erected in Warwick, it is without a bought the most prominent of all the churches in the city, the brainchild of Rt. Rev. Michael Potter P.P.V.F. It was officially opened in 1926.

 

Presbyterian Church.

Sometime during 1851, four years after the arrival of the first resident Presbyterian Minister at the Moreton Bay Settlement, the Warwick Presbyterian Church was established. It was the second provincial Church in the colony.

 

Methodist Church

The first Methodist service on the Darling Downs was held in the Slab Court House in Alice Street in 1855, and the Methodist Church instituted the first Warwick Sunday School on the first Sunday in 1856. On 5th September 1858, the first slab Church was built in Victoria Street, costing just over one hundred and ninety-five pounds.

 

Church of England.

The first Church of England services were held in the Horse and Jockey Public House in 1850, then at the Slab Court House in Alice Street.

 

The Salvation Army.

The work of the Salvation Army began in Warwick in 1887, a scant five years after the first Army work in Eastern Australia had begun.

 

The Roman Catholic Church.

The first services were conducted by Father McGinty at the Horse and Jockey Public House at the end of 1854, and then at the old Court House in Alice Street. The first stone Church was opened on 23rd August 1865.
